The physical benefits of Ballroom and Latin American dancing are obvious and well documented; a gentle form of exercise which is as challenging as the effort you put in. And as Ballroom Dancing is founded on walking, it is rehabilitative and natural, making it the perfect form of exercise for those recovering from injury or perhaps less mobile.
The wellbeing and mental health benefits are equally, if not more, apparent. Even if it is for one class or one hour a week, dancing can transport you from your everyday worries, by giving you something else to concentrate on, a focus on learning, fun, music and rhythms outside of the everyday stresses.
I have lost count of the people who talk about their weekly class or private lesson as their “therapy” as well as exercise.
I pride myself on ensuring an inclusive, sociable and relaxed atmosphere in all my Ballroom and Latin American Dancing and Latin in Line classes, where everyone, whatever your age or ability or whether you attend by yourself or with a partner, is welcome. No-one is ever left out, just supported and encouraged, building confidence while learning a new skill.
With the focus on the fun and sociable element of dancing just remember it’s never too early to start and never too late to learn…..!
Emma Mayo
I started dancing when I started walking, at my parents dancing school on the Isle of Wight, growing up in the studio, surrounded by dancing and teaching every day.
I trained in Ballroom, Latin American and Freestyle with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing gaining an Associate Teaching qualification and Diplomas under Janet Clark, in 2003.
An experienced teacher, with over 20 years’ experience, I have taught all ages… from 2-96!! I have taught in both the UK and USA, in schools, clubs, for examinations, show dances and hundreds of wedding couples for their special first dance.
Since settling in Newbury and becoming a mother, I have expanded my dancing classes and tuition, with various classes in Ballroom and Latin American and Latin in Line, at different levels in both the daytime and evenings, private lessons and Wedding first dance sessions, along with Sunday Socials for my students, providing relaxed and sociable opportunities to practise.
I am passionate about teaching and strongly believe in the positive effects that dance can have on health and well-being. I have an inclusive and friendly approach in classes to make sure they are fun and accessible for all, whilst grounded in strong technique.
And at my heart, my favourite clients are those who claim to have two left feet, in fact nothing gives me more joy that seeing those people grow in confidence, achieve more than they ever thought they could and start to LOVE dancing!!
So, take the first step and get in touch, and I will take care of the rest!
